“When I read those profiles, it makes me feel bad. I haven’t done any of that. How am I supposed to talk about myself then??”
Totally fair. And here’s the truth:
They didn’t start there either.
Most of them came from somewhere else—and rewrote how they talked about their past to fit where they were going.
You don’t need their exact experience.
You need to translate your own.
So if someone says they “led onboarding sessions for new clients”…
You might translate your classroom experience like this:
🧩 “Trained and supported 10+ new team members and student teachers over 3 years, including onboarding to school systems, instructional tools, and student data platforms.”
That’s real. That’s true. That’s relevant.
It’s not about stretching the truth—it’s about reframing it.
Here's How to Do It

Go to LinkedIn

Search for a job title you’re interested in (e.g. Customer Success Manager, Learning Designer)

Click “People” in the top bar

Pick 3 profiles that look interesting

Read their About section + job descriptions
Take notes on:

Phrases that stand out
-
Skills they highlight
-
Projects they mention
Then: look at your own experience and ask, “Where have I done something like this, even if it looked different?”

Look at real LI profiles to understand how your future role is described

Start a swipe file of language that feels right to you

Talk about what you’ve done in the context of where you’re going
