The first 50 words decide your fate.
Let’s be real, my friend. You’ve probably spent hours on your resume, polished your LinkedIn profile, and written a few bajillion cover letters… and yet, no callbacks.
Here’s what most people don’t realize:
recruiters (and hiring managers) only need a few seconds to make a decision.
If your first 50 words don’t catch their attention, the rest won’t even get read.
Why This Matters to You
Those first few lines at the top of your resume, LinkedIn “About” section, or the start of a cover letter are your chance to control the story.
You’ve got one shot to say, “Here’s who I am, and here’s why you should care.”
And when you’re making a career change, especially from education, that opener becomes even more important.
Why? Because most people waste it talking about students… not about the skills that matter in the role they want next.
Common Solutions and Why They Might Not Work
Let’s look at what people usually do — and why it doesn’t work:
❌ The “Buzzword Soup”
“Results-driven team player with excellent communication skills.”
You've seen it. You’ve maybe even used it. But it says nothing. It’s filler and recruiters know it.
❌ The “Student-Focused Story”
“Passionate teacher with 10+ years helping students grow and achieve their goals.”
We know you care about students but if you're applying for roles in Customer Success, Learning & Development, Ops, etc., that won’t cut it.
Hiring managers want to know:
How have you worked with adults?
How do you solve problems?
What happens when you do?
A Better Approach for You
Here’s a simple shift that will make all the difference. Instead of writing a summary that describes you, write one that positions you.
Use this 3-line format:
-
Who you supported (think: stakeholders, adults)
-
How you helped (processes, tools, systems, communication)
-
What changed (results, metrics, feedback)
👇 Real Example – Teacher → Customer Success Manager
Before:
“Experienced teacher skilled in lesson planning, student engagement, and classroom management.”
After:
I worked with 80+ parents every week to troubleshoot tech issues, clarify next steps, and build trust. I also coached fellow teachers on new platforms and led weekly syncs to keep everyone aligned. If your users need clear, proactive support, I’ve been doing that every day.
👇 Real Example – School Administrator → L&D Specialist
Before:
“Passionate administrator experienced in curriculum leadership and student achievement.”
After:
I built PD that people actually used. I onboarded new teachers, rolled out school-wide tools, and led trainings that helped 40+ staff stay sharp. I focus on clarity, real-world application, and ongoing just-in-time support.
Your Next Steps
-
Pull up your resume and LinkedIn profile.
-
Find the first 50 words you’ve written.
-
Ask: “Am I talking about adults? Am I showing value? Would someone want to keep reading?”
-
If not, use the 3-line approach: stakeholder → how you help → what changed.
-
Read it out loud. If it sounds like something you’d say to a hiring manager over coffee, you’re on the right track.
